Abstract: The collection is composed, principally, of the papers of a civil engineer and surveyor residing in Bellmore, Thomas D. Smith, accumulated during the course of his working on an improvement project(s) in the Far Rockaway area, especially the village of Far Rockaway itself, The papers are dated principally in the 1890s and for the most part are in typescript and include a few printed items.

Location: The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library.

Historical/Biographical Note

During the 1890s, the village of Far Rockaway (and probably some of the surrounding area as well) was undergoing extensive improvement in the way of street grading, sewer systems and the like. Apparently, Mr. Smith was one of the chief engineers on these projects.

Scope and Content Note

The papers which consist of approximately 170 documents have been arranged as follows.

Notices to Contractors -These apparently refer to improving sidewalks and roads, two or three items, however, refer not to the Rockaways but to Bronx and Manhattan locations, ca. 8 items

Contracts and Specifications -Refer to both roads and sewers ca. 4 items

Real Estate Indentures or Related items especially "Land Descriptions” regarding land in Far Rockaway. Some of the land may have been land deeded by the village in connection with making its improvements. This has not been determined for sure, however ca. 20 items.

Inspector's Report Brief stand form type reports signed by Inspector S. L. Johnson in reference to road construction. ca. 60 items

Work Contemplated There are three documents in this file headed "Work Originally Contemplated at Far Rockaway Village”. These consist of listing of various streets and avenues with a brief listing of the type of repair done to them.

Trap Rock Copies of letters sent out by Smith to contractors listing the cargoes of Trap rock measured by Smith for use in construction work. ca. 6 items

Certificates Four certificates (probably carbon copies) submitted by Smith to the "Macadam Road Board Town of Hempstead stating that various road projects have been completed.

Miscellaneous Several documents refer specially to road building. Other items include printed copy of "Rules and Regulations to be observed for... Water Company's Mains"; Printed Sanitary Regulations...of the Village of Far Rockaway"; a description in manuscript of the "boundary lines of the proposed incorporation of Far Rockaway Village"; and a description in manuscript of "plans for Sewerage Disposal Works at Far Rockaway". ca. 30 items

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
