Historical/Biographical Note

The Schoonmaker Family of Flatbush in Kings County was an old Dutch family in the area. A genealogy written by Daniel T.T. Ronk was issued in 1926. Some background on the specific individuals who are represented by the papers in this very small collection can be found in this work.

Michael Schoonmaker (1772-1845) was according to an insurance policy found in this collection, a general merchant who stocked "Dry Goods, Groceries…Hardware, paints, and oils…", and who operated his store under the name of Michael Schoonmaker and Son. His son, was Richard L. (Ludlow?) Schoonmaker (1816-1876). According to other papers in this collection, Michael Schoonmaker was Postmaster of the Village of Flatbush. A very few personal documents are, no doubt, interspersed among these business papers.

Scope and Content Note

Miscellaneous Papers of Michael Schoonmaker Pertaining to his role of Postmaster ca. 15 documents most of which are bills and receipts connected with the running of the office and dated in the 1820s, 1830s and 1840s

Miscellaneous Papers of Michael Schoonmaker Pertaining to his General Store Not all of the documents make mention of "Michael Schoonmaker and Son”, but it appears that all of the documents do concern themselves with the business. It is not known at what time he went into business with his son. There are about 75 documents in this file, a majority of which are cancelled checks dated 1842 and 1843. These items are made out as “M. Schoonmaker and Son” The other documents are virtually all receipted bills for various materials purchased, and most of these are dated in the very late 1830s. A very few items are dated earlier or later. One document dated 1829 is a personal one and pertains to Mr. Schoonmaker’s appointment as an administrator of the estate of Elizabeth Ludlow.

Miscellaneous Papers of Richard L. Schoonmaker Pertaining to his General Store These papers consist of about 75 cancelled checks, all made out "Richard L. Schoonraaker,11and dated for the most part in the late 1850s or early 1860s. Also included are about 15 other documents such as one letter regarding the "Youth's Temperance Society of Flatbush”; 2 insurance policies; and some receipts. Most of these latter are dated in the 1860s.

Miscellaneous Documents There are only 4 documents in this file, 3 of which are real estate deeds or related items. These apparently relate to other members of the family.
