Scope and Content Note

This collection of miscellaneous documents covers the period of 1686 to 1866. However, not all years are represented, and the bulk of the ca. 350-400 documents in the collection are dated 1801-1849. Only about 25 documents post date this period, and only some sixty documents predate it, with only 3 dated in the 17th century.

The provenance of this collection is unclear, but evidently the documents in it were gathered together because in one way or another they referred to inhabitants of the town of Southold (individual villages are seldom if ever mentioned in the documents, and therefore produce no evidence of specific locales involved. In many instances, no doubt, they probably lived in the village of Southold). Few if any documents refer to Southold Town as such and none can be construed as Town archives or official town records. Again, the collection is merely one of documents mentioning various Southold residents.

A majority of the documents are real estate indentures or financial documents such as bills and receipts. To a much lesser extent are other documents such as bonds, promissory notes, articles of agreements, and letters. Again, however, these latter are very much in the minority. Judging from the preponderance of such names as Albertson, Gardiner, Horton, L’Hommedieu, Goldsmith and Vail, it would seem that someone collected some of the papers of these individuals, added them to miscellaneous documents of other Southold families, and grouped them together under "Southold”. In this sense, then, the collection is probably composed in large measure of “Stray" items.

All documents have been filed in chronological order, usually by decade.
