Historical/Biographical Note

Miss Florence Anna Elizabeth Block was a librarian for the Queens Borough Public Library for forty-years retiring sometime in very late 1966 or very early 1967. For several years towards the close of her career she was Assistant Division Head of the Long Island Division (now the Archives at Queens Library). She died not too long after retiring and was buried in Glendale, the area where, as far as is known, she lived most of her life. Never married, it is known that she had at least one sister, Helen.

Preferred Citation

Published citations should take the following form:

Creator of item, date of item (if known), identification of item, if a photograph its control number. The Florence A.E. and Helen Block Miscellaneous Certificates, Archives at Queens Library, Queens Borough Public Library.

Provenance

These documents arrived at the Library quite by chance in early May of 1985 having been donated by an individual residing in Glendale who recognized them as items which might have some interest for us. She had purchased them at a rummage sale conducted by the Redeemer Lutheran Church and had been notified by one of the helpers at the sale that the Block sisters had once been librarians at the school. No doubt, the items had somehow been picked up by some member of the Church when the last of the family died.
