Historical/Biographical Note

Lifelong Queens’ resident, Nicholas Hirshon began teaching journalism at his alma mater, St. John’s University, in 2010. Mr. Hirshon had previously written two award-winning series on overlooked historic sites in Queens while reporting for the New York Daily News. He left the Daily News in 2011 to teach more and to do research on his hometown of Forest Hills. Mr. Hirshon has a friendship with Immaculate Conception middle school teacher Carl Ballenas. Sharing a mutual interest in history, they decided they would work together on a project in which St. John’s students would interview modern day versions of historical figures that had been researched by Immaculate Conception students.

Mr. Hirshon’s Feature Writing course took place at St. John’s University in fall 2012. Individual students were matched with honor students from Mr. Ballenas’ middle school class. The middle school students researched historical figures, from various backgrounds, that shaped the borough of Queens in the 1800s and 1900s. The middle school students presented their research to the St. John’s students. For example, if a middle school student researched the pastor of a Queens church in 1800, a St. John’s student profiled the current pastor of a Queens Church. St. Johns’ students then contacted potential interviewees and constructed a profile of between 800 and 1,000 words.

A program was held at St. John’s University in November 2012 in which the St. John’s students presented their interviews and explained some of the difficulties they encountered when setting up meetings or finding a subject. Mr. Ballenas’ middle school class attended the program. The written interviews were donated to the Archives at Queens Library in December 2012.

Scope and Content Note

The St. John’s University: Profiles Collection (1 box; .5 cubic feet, 2012) highlight the results of St. John’s University students interviews with various people that were either born, living, or working in the geographical Long Island area. The project was created by St. John’s professor, and former New York Daily News reporter, Nicholas Hirshon with input from Immaculate Conception middle school teacher Carl Bellenas. Mr. Bellenas’ class researched various people from Queens’ past and Mr. Hirshon had his students find someone from contemporary times for his students to interview that matched the people from the middle school class. The students then turned their interviews into written news stories.

The records are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the person interviewed. A note is put on all envelopes indicating the interviewees’ profession and the name of the student who did the interviewing. Mr. Hirshon has planned for a similar project to take place in the ensuing semesters. The names of the St. John’s students who participated are:
