Historical/Biographical Note

A biographical sketch of Cuyler Beebe Tuthill was written by the late Peter Van Santvoord in the May 1964 issue of the "Long Island Forum". From it we learn that Mr. Tuthill was born on July 20, 1874 in Southold and that as a young man attended the Pratt Institute of Architecture from which he graduated in 1396. Mr. Tuthill designed a number of public buildings on the Island including Jamaica Hospital, the Astoria and Jamaica public libraries, and the Maspeth City Incinerator. When he retired around 1949, he began to pursue in some depth his study of local history. He prepared an autobiography consisting of the collections and observations of his own lifetime and wrote some 50 essays on historical subjects. However, his most ambitious project was the sketching of “101 Early Farm Type Homes on Long Island", a series of sketches in which he sought “to preserve for posterity the architectural beauties and unique features of the Island’s old buildings. The buildings he selected were located throughout Nassau County, with some in Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn. Twenty-four of them have since disappeared or been removed from their original sites". It is to this last project that this very small collection of papers refers.

Mr. Tuthill (who was more familiarly known as Colonel Tuthill,) died on March 2, 1968.

Scope and Content Note

A very small collection consisting only of some 40 items, these miscellaneous papers are grouped as follows.

Catalog of the Tuthill Drawings and some related data. The catalog is a mimeographed copy. Each of the 101 buildings sketched by Colonel Tuthill is described by him in a brief paragraph. Also in this file is a listing (no descriptions) of the buildings with some hand written notes added 9 to some of the entries by the Colonel. Also herein are some additional reproductions of the listing of homes. In addition, this file contains a draft (evidently not complete) of the Colonel’s Autobiography. This is dated 1960. As far as is known, the Autobiography was published in a very limited quantity, but the Queens Borough Public Library does not own a copy. Some miscellaneous items conclude this file.

Miscellaneous Correspondence consisting of about 30 pieces, this file is composed primarily of correspondence (as well as memoranda or notes) between Mr. Tuthill and the Queens Borough Public Library during the 1960s at which time the Colonel’s sketches though stored in the Library had not been officially donated to it. The correspondence refers basically to the question of the reproduction of the sketches.
