Historical/Biographical Note

Rockaway Naval Air Station was opened in 1917, shortly after the entrance of the United States into World War I. It occupied the western half of what is now Jacob Riis Park. The air base fell into disuse after the war, and was finally closed in 1930. The dirigibles pictured in the photographs were used exclusively for anti-submarine patrols. The dirigible hangar, the largest of the base’s hangars, was located just east of what is now Beach 169 Street.
