Scope and Content Note

The collection is a small one consisting only of 10 bound volumes divided into two series as follows.

Daybooks Daybooks were used by merchants and others to record in chronological order the financial transactions of the day, that is, with whom they did business and the amount of said business. Entries are very brief. There are eight volumes in this series. Two of them were assigned letters by Mr. Van Scoy, and six numbers. Since we do not have the full sequence, it can be assumed that other volumes existed at one time. Among the items listed in the volumes are rum, calico, sugar and molasses. Many others are listed as well. Mr. Van Scoy outfitted a number of whaling ships, and several of the volumes make mention of the various captains of said vessels. The volumes range in date from June 1827 – December 1838. As of August 2000 the volume covering February 1832 to June 1832 was missing.

Account Books Accounts were maintained by name of individual. Some accounts terminated within a year or two; others for five, six or more years. There are but two volumes in this series, and both have name indexes. The following periods are covered, over lapping occurring because, as mentioned above, some individuals maintained accounts for longer periods. They range in date from 1823 – 1831.
