Historical/Biographical Note
There is an insertion of a copy letter from Daniel Carter Beard, founder of the Boy Scouts, who lived in Flushing, Queens. The letter is addressed to Joseph H. Brinton, Scout Executive, Queens County Council in Flushing. Daniel Carter Beard as National Scout Commissioner corrects Joseph Brinton's understanding about the Queens County Council formation. He explained how he, Mrs. Beard and Judge Fitch discussed the proposal to form a Queens County Council of Boy Scouts at Daniel Carter Beard's home. From then forward, it became a reality. The first meeting, May 26, 1915 listed those present and from which communities they resided. Notable individuals, such as Alrick H. Man, who was the son of Richmond Hill's founder, (please see attached biographical sketch), and George J. Ryan, an educator for whom J. H. S. #216 is named, are among those listed.
The Boy Scouts of America, Queens Council was located at Scout Headquarters, 145-18 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, New York.
