Descriptive Summary

Creator Van Nuyse Family
Title George Van Nuyse and John Holmes Van Brunt Families Miscellaneous Papers,
Dates: 1827-1874
Abstract: There are about 220 documents in this collection including one bound volume (a combination daybook and account book maintained by George Van Nuyse ca. 1827-1832-several pages have been torn out). The majority are dated 1828-1832 and the l840s and 1850s. Several go back to the 18th century and probably refer to a predecessor of George Van Brunt bearing the same name, while a few documents are dated as late as 1874. For the most part the documents consist of receipted bills. Also included, however, are real estate deeds, and several documents which are either wills or related items such as inventory of the goods of a deceased. Occasionally, the name Van Nuyse is spelled Van Nice. Documents have been arranged in a chronological order.
Extent: 1 box, .5 cubic feet
Identification: V-3
Location: The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library.

Historical/Biographical Note

The Van Nuyse and Van Brunt families were residents of the Flatlands Township of Kings County. Genealogical information is lacking on the specific individuals and their relatives whose papers this collection comprises. Other than a very few pertinent entries in the volume, published in 1867 by Munsell titled Genealogy of the Van Brunt Family, 1653-1867 and written by Teunis G. Bergen, some vital statistics have been gathered by an examination of certain of the documents in the collection. George Van Nuyse who died in 1831 or 1832 was listed as a farmer in a real estate deed dated shortly after his death. His wife, Margaret was named an administrator, probably in conjunction with John Ditmars. She was alive at least through the 1860s. They had, as far as is known, one daughter, Cornelia who married John Holmes Van Brunt. An 1862 undertaker's bill shows that Cornelia Van Brunt died in 1862.
