Historical/Biographical Note

Obituaries of Mary E. Waldron and Aletta Waldron found in the "Newtown Register" of June 21, 1833 and Feb 23, 1895 respectively provides a few clues as to the identity of the family. From them we learn that Miss Aletta Waldron died at 61 Van Voorhis Street in Brooklyn, but was a well-known resident of Newtown. She was the daughter of Samuel and Ann Waldron, a member of the Reformed Dutch Church and for many years lived on North Terrace in Newtown Village. Mary E. Waldron was born in Newtown on Nov. 27, 1821 and died on June 16, 1830. She was the youngest child of Jacob and Fanny Duryee, and married Hendrick E. Waldron on Nov. 18, 1846. She was also a member of the Reformed Church. Judging from documents in the collection, it is quite possible that the family lived in Astoria and Long Island City for a time or at any event owned some property there.

Scope and Content Note

The documents have been arranged in chronological order and grouped by decade, from the 1840s to the 1880s. Except for the 1850s and 1870s not all years are represented within each decade. All items are filed by date the bills were receipted. The majority of the items are for real estate and personal property taxes paid to the Town of Newtown. There are a few tax bills which were paid to the Village of Astoria, and Long Island City. Bills other than taxes are for such services as medical fees, household furnishings, etc. These are for the most part dated in the 1880s.

The miscellaneous items consist of the following.

Articles of Agreement between Edward Ketchan and Abraham Morrell of Newtown, dated Apr 30, 1795

Receipt dated May (1?), 1824 regarding money paid out by the executors of the late Hendrick Emans of Jamaica

Notices dated Astoria Feb 5 and Feb 12, 1856 regarding the seizure of horses owned by Samuel Waldron for the non-payment of taxes (one notice appears to have been issued also as a receipt)

Bond dated Jul 20, 1872 -between Aletta Waldron and Charles F. Erhard

Copy of the will of Mary E. Waldron, dated Oct. 31, 1883

Agreement between Mary E Waldron and Aletta Waldron, dated Feb 20, 1884 regarding the rental of certain property

Letter dated Oct 6, l886 from the New York Historical Society to Aletta Waldron re: a print published in 1731 entitled "View of the New Dutch Church” which Miss Waldron had in her possession.
