Historical/Biographical Note
Jacob F. Wieners Jr. was a professional photographer who lived in College Point, New York. He was born about 1865 in College Point. He first took up photography as a hobby, only going into business as a professional photographer around the mid-1880s, when he was in his early twenties. He established his first studio in his home, at the corner of 14th and High Streets in College Point. In 1897 he moved his studio to a new location at 87 Main Street in the main business district of Flushing. He remained there until June of 1902, when he moved back to College Point.
While Wieners did probably the majority of his business as a photographer of studio portraits, he was also commissioned to photograph the homes of many of College Point’s well-to-do residents. At the turn of the twentieth century College Point was a popular destination for vacationers, so Wieners also shot numerous views of the area’s many hotels and resorts.
By the year 1920 Wieners had given up his photography business and was employed as a carpenter in a factory. The 1930 census shows Wieners still working as a carpenter, and still living in College Point with a wife, Sophie, who was 6 years his junior. The Wieners Photographs were donated to the Long Island Division by one of our former librarians, the late Robert C. Friedrich. They were at one time part of Mr. Friedrich’s larger collection of historic photographs of College Point.

Organization: The Wieners Photographs were donated to the Long Island Division by one of our former librarians, the late Robert C. Friedrich. They were at one time part of Mr. Friedrich’s larger collection of historic photographs of College Point. To most of the Wieners photographs, Mr. Friedrich assigned two control numbers: a JFW (for Jacob F. Wieners) number, and a CP (for College Point) number. We have filed the photographs by JFW number, though we have also retained Mr. Friedrich’s CP numbers (they are recorded on the lower right hand corner of each print and negative envelope). Those photographs that were not given JFW numbers by Mr. Friedrich have been ordered by CP number, and assigned new JFW numbers.

There are a large number of other portraits of unknown individuals, but since no identifying information is available, we have chosen not to include these pictures with the main body of the collection.
