Abstract: | The George W. Winans Collection consists of a small number of photographs taken by Mr. Winans and a larger number of pictures by other photographers whose work Mr. Winans collected. Most of these photographs depict streets, houses and other places of interest in and around Jamaica. Mr. Winans’ photographs are mainly views of houses and streets in Jamaica, taken between 1932 and 1951. Another 222 photographs of similar views were taken by F. Dietz, Mr. Winans’ friend and collaborator, in 1940 and 1949. Many of the houses in these photographs were later demolished to make way for the York College campus. Approximately 84 photographs are views of Jamaica and Meadowmere taken by the photographer Dan Smith. The remaining images include photographs by William E. Case, Eugene L. Armbruster, Charles W. Conklin and Amy Phelps. | |

Historical/Biographical Note
George Woodruff Winans (b. August 25, 1873, d. 1964) was a postal employee and amateur historian who devoted much of his life to researching the local history of Jamaica, Queens. He lived at 87-21 175th Street in Jamaica with his wife Jessie and their five children (Ruth, David, Paul, Robert and Virginia). During his lifetime Mr. Winans produced a number of manuscripts on the history of Jamaica, including “First Presbyterian Church of Jamaica, New York, 1662-1942”, “A History of the Jamaica Post Office” and “Old Roads of Jamaica Township in Colonial Days”. None of these works were published commercially.

Access Restrictions
Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
