Abstract: The Wright Family lived in Valley Stream on Corona Avenue during the First World War. William Wright was a private at both Camp Dix, in New Jersey, and Camp Upton, in Long Island. Mr. Wright and his wife, Ethel, wrote each other constantly. Their letters make up the bulk of this collection. The collection contains letters from other family members and property negotiations.

Historical/Biographical Note

The Wright Family of Valley Stream Papers (1 folder, 1902-1932) focuses on the correspondence between Private William Wright and his wife Ethel during the First World War. The young couple wrote each other constantly during Pvt. Wright’s stay at two Metropolitan Army camps. Private Wright was stationed in Camp Dix, New Jersey and Camp Upton, Long Island. The Wrights may have had a child as Ms. Wright is seen in photographs holding a child. The baby is never referred to in any of the letters within the collection. The family resided in Valley Stream on Corona Avenue.

There are also letters between Ethel Wright and Henry Abel regarding property owned by the Wright Family from the mid 1920’s to the early 1930’s. Mr. Abel resided in both Astoria and Brooklyn during this time. Pvt. Wright had a brother that lived in Richmond Hill.

The Wright Family of Valley Stream Papers (1 folder, 1902-1932) highlight the correspondence between Pvt. William Wright of the United States Army and his wife Ethel Wright. The family resided in Valley Stream Long Island. The collection includes:

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
