Description: Hell Gate, a pass in the East River between New York City and Long Island, was hazardous to vessels due to rocks and reefs located mid-channel. "Flood Rock," one of the largest of the stony projections, was mined with forty-two thousand pounds of dynamite and one hundred and twenty tons of other explosives. Here, the photographer captures the explosion, on October 10, 1884. More than five hundred thousand tons of rock were loosened, allowing dredging to commence. A view of the river in the aftermath of the blast can be seen in record jfw-000447.
