Description: Gertrude McDonald says Sunnyside was so safe, residents could leave money in milk bottle for milkman, leave doors and fire escapes open, and neighbors walked in and out of each others' apartments. She believed the community was fortunate to experience less crime than other New York City neighborhoods, but did think the police department was understaffed. In response, Mrs. McDonald led a campaign to get more police, and organized community members to send five thousand postcards to City Hall. As a result, they did get more police.
