Description: This postcard depicts beachgoers "bathing" in the ocean by holding on to ropes attached to poles and buoys. In the early 20th century, the Hammels community was a popular Rockaway seaside destination; it had its own stop on the Long Island Rail Road until 1941. The hand-written message on the reverse of the card reads: "Dear Cousin Olga: - You can expect Herman at 403 P.M. Sunday. Have not heard from you yet to my last letter. Your Cousin Lu." It is postmarked July 10, 1908, from Brooklyn, N.Y.; [Written on back] Miss Olga Schrader, Herkimer Herkimer County N.Y.; Dear Cousing Olga: You can expect Herman at 4:03 P.M. Sunday. Have not heard from you yet to my last letter. Your Cousin Lu.
