Description: This small collection consists of nine documents. Included are four letters dated 1861, 1863 and 1865 from Clark to his wife and son Edgar from Washington D.C., St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Charleston. In varying degrees, these concern business matters, family matters, and news of the Civil War. Also included is a manuscript (11 pages) dated Brooklyn Jan 27, 1856 telling the story of Abraham of the Old Testament, and addressed by Clark to his two children; a manuscript poem titled "The Wounded Hussar", copied by Clark; a mathematical rule upon which is written "Rule invented in 1830 by P.C."; a recommendation written by George D. Hall of the Sligo Iron Store in St. Louis dated Feb 16, 1868 for John A. Clark who is being let go because of slowness in the business; and a speech in manuscript delivered in Tennessee. The name of Clark is not found on it, but it is presumed to be his. At any rate, the author has written on it "Remarks made by me... at a supper given ... at Memphis, Feb 26, 1864 in response to the toast 'Redeemed Tennessee’".
