Description: Safety harnesses were not commonly used in 1898, as evidenced in this view of workers building a railroad trestle over the Manhasset marshes. The residents of Port Washington persuaded the Long Island Rail Road to extend the terminus of the North Side branch (now the Port Washington branch) to their hometown, requiring the construction of the Manhasset Viaduct over the marshes at the southern end of Manhasset Bay. Accompanying notes indicate the photo was taken about 75 feet southeast of the east abutment.
