Description: A view of the Fulton Ferry House, with a tower of the unfinished Brooklyn Bridge seen under construction behind it, at right. Note the numerous horsecars waiting outside the terminal. This photograph contains the caption: "Fulton Ferry House, Brooklyn, 1874. At this time, the main artery of travel between New York and Brooklyn. Tower of the Brooklyn Bridge at right, in the course of construction. Courtesy Dr. R. S. Barbour." The photograph appeared in the 1917-1918 edition of Valentine's Manual of the City of New York, New series no.2, and is described on pages 10 and 11 as having been acquired by R.S. Barbour "in his student days in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1874. They were made by an English firm for foreign markets exclusively and...never offered for sale in New York at all."
