Merrils and Co. Records
Description: According to two contract agreements found in this small collection of about 80 documents, the firm of Merrils and Co. was established on Jun 15, 1816 to "conduct the business of the manufactory of Earthen Ware in the buildings heretofore used for that purpose situate in Harshamoque in Southold ... on the lands of William Albertson...”. The contract is composed of several parts, and it is not clear to us whether the name, Merrils and Co. referred to all the operations involved in the manufacturing of the product or only to "the transportation sale and disposition of the said articles to be manufactoried...” (last article of agreement). At any event, it has been deemed proper to title the whole collection as The Merrils and Co. Records since we have not been able to locate any published description of the operation. The contracts were signed by Thomas S. Lester of Southold, Joseph C. Albertson of Riverhead, and Marvin Merrils of Southold, the latter being the prime mover or principal in the country.
