Description: Aravella Simotas discusses growing up in Astoria with a Greek background. Her parents always stressed the importance of keeping in touch with their culture and roots and sent their children to Greek school in addition to public school. She now realizes and appreciates all that her parents did during her childhood as they always encouraged her to succeed for all that she had potential to do. She appreciates the hard-working immigrant values that her parents instilled within her. She grew up always believing that it was her responsibility, no matter how far ahead in life she got, to always give back to the community.
