Description: The group describes the Astoria they remember in the past, as well as their favorite things about 30th avenue. In the 1960s, Astoria was predominantly German and was all working people. It was centrally located and you could be in the city in 10 minutes. Mary Devitt says it was once German, Italian, and Irish, but more German than anything else. St Joseph's Church was founded by the Germans. There are also quite a lot of religions in Astoria, as well as old mansions from the sailing days. The best thing about 30th Avenue is its close proximity to conveniences such as shopping, churches, and the subway and the mix of people that keeps them all grounded. They note that they actually know their neighbors.
