Description: Dolores Fernandez Alic grew up in Astoria, Queens in the 1950s and 60s. This interview discusses her memories of her parents and growing up in Astoria (Queens). She talks about growing up in a bi-racial, bi-religious, and multi-lingual household—with a Filipino, Catholic father and a Scandinavian, Protestant mother. She participated in many Filipino-American beauty contests and parades, and she shares memories of visiting the Brooklyn Navy Yard with her father. She discusses the ways she stays involved in the Filipino-American community today, and how her family upbringing influenced her to proud of her heritage. Her family is featured in the book, Filipinos in New York City (2015) by Aracadia Publishing and the Filipino-American National Historical Society.
