Description: According to Mr. Hourahan, the impact of the World's Fairs on Flushing included topographical changes consisting of man made lakes, Flushing Creek, and ash heaps. The perceptions that people came from other countries to work at the fair and then stayed, or that the fair spurred immigration, are not entirely accurate. The proprietor of the Taiwan Exhibition in 1964 remained after the fair and opened a restaurant, but Hourahan contends that he was an unusual case since Flushing had crime and drug problems at the time.
