Description: Mary Kaiser describes how she got an allowance of 50 cents a week, which she spent mostly on pencils because she frequently lost them. At the suggestion of her friend Margaret's mother, she got some money depositing bottles. She and Margaret started doing weekend deliveries for a butcher on their bicycles. When she was in high school she worked in a candy factory that made gumdrops on 149th street in the summertime. She recalls how the employees were allowed to eat all the candy they wanted, which killed their appetite for it after a few days on the job.
