Description: According to Tirado, the recession in the 1980's emptied stores on Main Street. Then section 8 housing came along with public assistance, more police, and more crime. She remembers the 1980's as the first wave of immigration from South Asia. Cubans came in 70's, Colombians in 80's, and people from Latin American countries as well. Ms. Tirado notes that a lot of businesses are now run by Asian residents. She believes that people are frustrated by the language barrier in shopping at stores where the signs are not primarily in English, and it is difficult to know the correct prices.
