Description: Dress of 1870 - Pearl gray faille trimmed with lavender velvet. The very short waisted Basque has two pleats in back, giving a coat-tail effect. There are two boned darts on each side of the front of a boned underarm seam. The sleeves are set in the armhole with cording and the entire Basque is lined with white taffeta. The overskirt is knee length in front and has three wide pleats at side which fall upward and extend toward the back, forming the Polonaise effect. The characteristics train if finished with a scant ruffle and a pleated dust ruffle of white muslin edged with French Val lace. Watercolor painted by Bessie Forman.
