Jackson Heights My Pride Stories
Collection: Queens Memory Collection at the Archives at Queens Library
Description: In the summer of 2018, the Queens Library had an employee contingent marching in the Queens Pride Parade for the first time. An LGBTQ+ Planning Committee consisting of staff from across the library system, came together to organize library programming, collections and activities around the march. As part of the festivities during the weekend of Queens Pride (June 2-3), Queens Memory created an interactive installation at the Glen Oaks Community Library on June 2nd that then traveled to the Jackson Heights Community Library on June 3rd...just a block from the parade route. The interactive exhibit simply provided markers and paper for passers-by to use in answering the prompt, “My Pride Story.” The personal stories, messages to other visitors, and drawings created by participants; hung decoratively on lines of string in the Jackson Heights Community Library for the rest of Pride month. These are the contributions created during the installation.
