Erna Hernandez Barenio, Full Interview
Collection: My Baryo, My Borough Collection at the Archives at Queens Library: Erna Hernandez Barenio
Description: Erna Hernandez is a Filipina American who was raised in Queens, and has lived there all her life. She was raised in Woodside until 1984 or 1985, and she speaks about what the neighborhood around 70th street and Roosevelt Avenue was like during the 1980’s. The family moved to Briarwood, Queens in either 1984 or 1985, when she was still in third grade, because they felt that Woodside was not as safe as it used to be. It was during her high school years, that she started to explore Filipino as an identity and as a culture. Over the years, she attended many Filipino events and functions. It was her friend Aristotle who introduced her to Filipino literature and arts; which became a turning point for her because it made her view another aspect of her culture that she did not know existed. She joined the Filipino organizations "Archipelago" and "Native Souls" during her college years.
