Description: "Gypsy" Camp in Maspeth - View from Maurice Avenue looking east toward Hyatt Heights Hill in Maspeth, the Romani camp (aka Gypsy) can be seen at the base of the hill, and was located SE of Maurice Avenue and NE of 54th Avenue (former Newtown Avenue). The Maspeth Romani camp was here from the early 1920’s until 1939 when the city executed evictions in the name of the Health Department; after leveling the homes the Queens Midtown Expressway came through. This area became known as Ridgewood Plateau when development began in the vicinity in 1929. The Maspeth Romani were Ludar, and came from north of the Balkans, Hungary, and the Banat.
