Description: The George W. Winans Collection consists of a small number of photographs taken by Mr. Winans and a larger number of pictures by other photographers whose work Mr. Winans collected. Most of these photographs depict streets, houses and other places of interest in and around Jamaica. Mr. Winans’ photographs are mainly views of houses and streets in Jamaica, taken between 1932 and 1951. Another 222 photographs of similar views were taken by F. Dietz, Mr. Winans’ friend and collaborator, in 1940 and 1949. Many of the houses in these photographs were later demolished to make way for the York College campus. Approximately 84 photographs are views of Jamaica and Meadowmere taken by the photographer Dan Smith. The remaining images include photographs by William E. Case, Eugene L. Armbruster, Charles W. Conklin and Amy Phelps.
