Food Made for Nili Ness by the Elderly Neighbor She Shopped for During the COVID-19 Pandemic, 2020-

Detail

DateApril 24, 2020DescriptionNili Ness writes: When we first started feeling like COVID was becoming a real threat in NYC, I ran into my neighbor and asked if she ever needed anything to let me know. She laughed it off but as things became more serious, I texted her to see if there was anything I could do for her. She is 73 and lives by herself with family in CA and India. Eventually she agreed to let me get groceries for her, always insisting on paying for the groceries saying, “I have always had a giving hand, not a taking hand.” And since that day, once or twice a day she calls me to come pick up a bag packed with home cooked South Indian food off of her doorknob. I love that our interactions are symbiotic and that it gives us a reason to call each day and check in with each other. I love that I get delicious food surprises every day. She tells me that when she calls her brother in India, he tells her, “Ok, it’s getting late, you must start cooking, that girl is waiting.” She told me this by way of showing me that it is his way of making sure she doesn’t get too down to cook and eat for herself and as a way to not make me feel bad that she is always giving me food. I have been taking a photo of every food parcel that she has gifted me.SourceCollected as part of the Queens Memory COVID-19 ProjectPhotographerNess, NiliLocation82nd Street, Jackson Heights, Queens, NYGeographic coverageJackson Heights (New York, N.Y.)Queens (New York, N.Y.)Geographic coordinates^[1]SubjectCOVID-19 Pandemic, 2020-CookingIndian cookingNeighborsIdentifierNess-Nili-04242020-020TypeColor photographsOriginal formatDigital photographsMeasurements4.08 x 5.44 inchesResolution600 ppiRights statementContact digitalarchives@queenslibrary.org for research and reproduction requests.
