Detail

Date1775-1824DescriptionLittle biographical information concerning the principals involved has been located. According to the "Nicholas W. Schenck Diary" at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Captain Nicholas Schenck was born in 1732 and died in 1810. It is known that the Schenck family was an old one in Kings County. If the Captain Schenck mentioned in these documents was a relation of this family, or in other words, an American loyalist, or if he was a British soldier is not known. The Certificate of Appointment (1802) found in this collection would seem to indicate that Schenck was probably an American loyalist, and was later pardoned, that is, assuming that this Schenck is the same individual mentioned in the earlier documents. Colonel Axtell, from which many of the communications came from was evidently one of the chief commanders of the British in the Kings County area. Most documents are in rather poor condition. All are arranged in chronological order as indicated on the Calendar which follows. The only exception is a document dated in 1724 which has no relation to the others. This is filed last. This document, incidentally would tend to indicate that Captain Nicholas Schenck was indeed related to the Schenck Family of Kings County, and therefore an American loyalist rather than an Englishman.
