Description: An excellent view of the workings of Mr. Roe's motorized ice scooter. The wheel, studded with pointed teeth, could be raised or lowered and served as the driving mechanism. Mr. Roe's 600 lb. ice scooter was his patented design; it was manufactured and sold in a Patchogue factory salesroom. Ice scooters were originally designed to facilitate the commute of the U.S. Life Saving Service between Fire Island and mainland Long Island. The design proved popular, and iceboat and ice scooter racing evolved into a local sport.
