Description: Hell Gate, a pass in the East River between New York City and Long Island, was hazardous to vessels due to rocks and reefs located mid-channel. "Flood Rock," one of the largest of the stony projections, was mined with forty-two thousand pounds of dynamite and one hundred and twenty tons of other explosives. This is a view of the river as it appeared after the blast. The explosion itself was also captured by the photographer, and can be seen in records jfw-000278 and jfw-000279.
