Identifier: aql:21890

Description: Nancy Solomon is a folklorist and architectural historian interested in local traditional culture. In the early 1990s Nancy was hired by the Queens Council on the Arts to conduct some interviews with local residents about their culture and family histories, and to examine the local traditional architecture of Broad Channel, including its annual Labor Day parade. This was prior to the controversial floats that the parade hosted. She interviewed several local residents about the history of the community, and notable historic sites. The slides represent some of the unique places that define the community. A copy of the report may be found at the Queens Council on the Arts. The Beachside Bungalow Preservation Association hired Nancy Solomon to prepare a nomination for the bungalows of Far Rockaway, located on Beach 24-26 Streets, to the National Register of Historic Places. The district was approved in 2013 by the Keeper of the National Register with approval from the NY State Historic Preservation Office. The photographs were taken in 2011-12, before and after Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.
