Description: Linen Printed in Blue from an Engraved Wood-block (with Peacock) - Early 19th Century. The whole piece of linen measures twenty-five inches, from selvage to selvage. It was spun and woven at home on the narrow loom then used for cotton and flax yarns. The printing was probably done by a craftsman in the locality. One such craftsman advertised, "In Front Street, in Philadelphia, lives on John Whitesake, who Kallanders and Presses all sorts of Cloths, Silks, Satins.....Makes Buckram, Prints Linens, Carpets and Counterpanes, which will hold their color in washing." The design seems to be a Colonial version of the elaborate bird chintzes then imported from England. Watercolor painted by Mina Lowry. One of Two versions of this Peacock print painted by Mina Lowry. [Description taken from accompanying exhibition card.]
