Description: Dress Dating from about 1860 - Made of Green Taffeta. The bodice is a Basque, a tightly fitted jacket with a peplum, this one being trimmed with a pleated ruffling. The sleeves, set with piping into the snug, off-the-shoulder armholes, are cut wide and slashed from the elbow. Basques with bell sleeves were increasingly in vogue from 1860 on. The skirt, with an apron front and a sweeping fullness at the back, is lengthened with a deep pleated ruffle at the bottom. The voluminous sleeves and skirt gave very large contour to the silhouette of the period. Watercolor by Jessie M. Benge. [Description taken from accompanying exhibition card.]
