The development was originally build as housing for workers at the United Nations when it was located at Lake Success. People from all over the world have always lived in Parkway Village, at first due to the United Nations and later as it became home to new immigrants of diverse backgrounds. In the early years of its existence, the only people of color who were allowed to live in Parkway Village were employees at the United Nations. African Americans only began to move into the neighborhood in the late 1970's. Ms. Greenwald describes the area as a safe place to raise children.
